Uber and Lyft Accident Lawyer

A group of people standing around an accident.

When is an automobile related accident not stressful? No matter who is at fault, the experience and its aftermath are traumatic.

Now add to that the new and continuously evolving rules around Uber, Lyft, and other ridesharing services, and you can find yourself in more confusion and frustration than ever. When accidents happen, these companies are in no big hurry to shoulder the blame.

What is Rideshare?

Ridesharing is a way that anyone with a driver’s license and a car can be paid to give people rides. Unlike traditional taxis, often governed by stiff and complex regulations, services like Uber and Lyft use smartphone applications to connect passengers with drivers.

What you need to know

In most states, a rideshare driver is supposed to be covered by both “on duty†insurance and “off duty†insurance. A driver goes “on duty†when they accept a paying passenger through their rideshare app. This ends when they drop off their passenger.

How rideshare insurance works is still a shifting landscape because the industry is so new. Mostly, it’s important to note and document everything you can.

To start with, insurance companies and your rideshare attorney will want to see the other driver’s:

  • Name
  • Name of the vehicle owner if not the same as the driver
  • Names of any passengers
  • Vehicle make, model and license plate number
  • Insurance information: company name, policy number and phone number to call for claims
  • (it’s a good idea to take a photo of the other driver’s insurance card and driver’s license, and to let them do the same)
